GRAVEN

graduation film 2019

Synopsis

Every now and then a man feels the urge to drive to the sea and dig a hole in the sand.
Armed with his red hat, his yellowed tank top and his shovel, he works avidly and with devotion. Passers-by ask themselves questions about the crater that keeps getting deeper. What drives this man and when will it end?

Reviews

"This film deconstructs classical dramaturgy and lingers on filming the repetition of the same gesture, the same effort at a time when the change of pace and things has become frenetic. It then establishes long time and repetition as the basis of existence."

Audience Award (Leuven Kort)

"The audience went flat for Graven, in which Tom Audenaert plays a crazy beachcomber. [...] A new generation stands up."

DE STANDAARD

"Tom Audenaert seems to have run away from Wes Anderson's The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou - a deep well on a beach. Close-ups and slow-motion images emphasize his drive, even though it is never clear why he digs meters deep with a spade.
